The Worst Things Can Be A Gift

How do I measure personal growth and find value from this experience? I’m an upbeat guy, and the BOP guards are trained professionals at crushing a man’s soul. Most guards don’t care one way or the other about an inmate. Since I am in a negative and emotionally charged environment, I constantly guard my thoughts and feelings. I believe a man is responsible for his emotions and behavior. So, the question becomes, “How do I thrive in custody?”

I work to stay active mentally and physically; it keeps me engaged and shows a willingness to reform. My well-being depends on maintaining a positive mental attitude. The only avenue for escaping this experience is through self-advocacy. It’s my responsibility to seek self-improvement opportunities. I enroll in educational activities like studying for a CDL, yoga, health matters, and history, besides participating in RDAP and reading self-improvement books. Daily I handwrite letters to home, write book reports, and call to stay connected with my family. Also, I spend time self-reflecting and analyzing my thoughts and actions in writing. The discipline is a joy because I’m building a better me. It requires hours of work, but what else is there to do in prison? This is the opportunity to create a meaningful and beneficial change. The worst things in life can be a gift to create massive positive results. I am working on improving myself and becoming a better person. I ask myself, “What lessons can I learn from this? Who do I need to become to achieve my desired outcome?”

The ultimate judge will be my wife, and her thoughts have been very encouraging. I am looking forward to coming home and for her to see my transformation.
