RDAP Near You

My RDAP (residential drug abuse program ... it’s for alcoholics too) class was supposed to begin today, but the program has been canceled at this camp. As usual, there was no warning or preparation by the staff or BOP. One day, the RDAP program was available and the next, the entire program was gone. It’s not just me that’s left hanging in the wind, but every camper scheduled to start RDAP is left without the counseling or guidance we all need.

The staff advised the current class of RDAP students about the program cancellation, but never explained anything to the new group of campers scheduled to begin the first phase. The case managers became overwhelmed with the group of campers, about 30 guys, looking for answers and transfers to another camp that can help with our addiction. As normal, the staff took their frustrations out on us, which is laughable because the terrible inconvenience was their own making. Of course, all a camper can do is exhibit tremendous patience and resilience - meaning don’t give up until you get some answers from the staff members. They will do their job if you’re persistent enough.

The latest rumor, seriously this is only a rumor, is that my RDAP class is being transferred to various camps throughout the nation that still offer the RDAP program. The question is when? I could lose valuable time in treatment that could help me overcome my addiction. The BOP makes available qualified professionals who are trained in the treatment program which could help guys like me, and I fully intend to use their guidance. I am worried that the longer I wait, the more likelihood of relapse on the other side of this prison experience. I want to get the help I need to overcome my craving for a drink so I can have a reasonable chance of success once I’m released.

The four camps being considered, again only a rumor at this point, that still offer the RDAP program are Yankton, South Dakota; Montgomery, Alabama; Leavenworth, Kansas; and Duluth, Minnesota. I would prefer Kansas or Alabama because it’s not cold all the time. I’m from a desert climate and enjoy the warmer weather, but honestly, I’ll go where the RDAP curriculum is available. I want to overcome alcoholism, and positively change my life trajectory. The fastest way to accomplish this goal is through the RDAP program. The only thing now is finding an RDAP program near me?

I trust in the good Lord and the BOP regional director to find a solution for this mess, but it is the BOP and decisions take a while to mature. I’ll keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best possible outcome.
